Chapter VIII

At the start of the chapter, Tris begins by shooting a gun.

"I squeeze the trigger, hesitantly at first and then harder, cringing away from the gun."

She was off at first, but then she got into the rhythm of hitting the target. In Abnegation, they almost never shot again. In fact, it was Tris's first time shooting a gun. When she described how much pain she felt after she shot the gun, I could feel the pain in my shoulder from when I shot a gun the first time. It was surprising to me how fast she caught on though. To me, shooting a gun is like riding a bike. It is a skill that you will never forget, and for Dauntless, shooting a gun is necessary for survival. Lastly, Tris wanted to get a tattoo of something that would remind her of home. So, she decided to get one of three birds on her collar bone. If I was in Dauntless, I would probably stay away from the tattoos and spend my points on clothing or luxury items.

Chapter VII

Tris was the first to jump, so she got an amazing welcome into the Dauntless compound. They are introduced to Four, the cool guy who loves to intimidate the initiates. One instance was when he mentioned only ten would last. I would be a bit nervous if he said this! Four introduces the initiates to the compound.

"Incredible is the word," I say, nodding.

The compound is huge! Four introduces the initiates to the Pit. An enormous hole in the middle of the room with water crashing against the side making loud noises are just a few features that this room has. The room has a dark light that appears to me to be a bit ominous!

Chapter VI

The dauntless kids walk outside of the building and its off to the races! Its a dead sprint to catch a train. If they can't catch the train, they fail initiation. What happens if you were an athletic kid, but were not fast? You would be left factionless. I do not believe that that is fair. Tris also meets another main character named Christina.

"That was fun," she says.

I do not agree with this comment. I do not believe jumping on a train and onto a series of skyscrapers is fun. Dauntless would not have been the faction for me!

Chapter V

Choosing ceremony! I loved this chapter. So much action! The 16 year olds line up in a straight line and Marcus (the one being attacked by the media) begins by notifying the audience why they are here and why their children are in this situation (reminds me of the video they play before Effie Trinket reads the tributes in The Hunger Games). Beatrice begins to second guess herself (I would too in this situation). At the end of the chapter, it was her turn to choose. Marcus hands her the knife and she draws blood.

"I am selfish. I am brave."

And she puts her blood into the pit of the DAUNTLESS.

Chapter IV

This chapter is about character development. We learn what Beatrice's dad does for a living too! We also learn the tension that the government has. Marcus seems like a kind, and nice guy. However, he is taking heat because his son transferred from Abnegation a couple years back.

"Well, really, it was Marcus who had the difficult day. I shouldn't lay claim to it."

Also, Caleb and Beatrice each try to spill the beans on their test results however each warn each other that the results are personal and should be kept to themselves. I understand why its so personal. If you talk with others about the decision, then they will make an impact on your decision. The government wants to keep the decision completely yours and not influenced by others. Beatrice and Caleb each go to bed and think about their decision.

Chapter III

I am shocked by the results. I cannot believe it! Tori left after she made this comment. Where did she go? Who did she talk to?

"That," she says, "was perplexing. Excuse me, I'll be right back." Perplexing?

There are many questions at this point in the novel. I am very interested in what will happen because of this result. Next, while Beatrice is walking home, a factionless man stops her and grabs her by the arm. He tells her to "chose wisely". He let go and Beatrice quickly returned home. How creepy!

Chapter II

It was time for the aptitude tests! Beatrice was given a mysterious liquid that Tori (the instructor) would not tell her what it was! I think that it is a foreshadowing for later in the novel.

"Can't tell you that. Just trust me."

Inside of her conscious is where things begin with the tests. First, there is a situation with a dog, then a girl was almost mauled by the dog, then lastly a situation where Beatrice was asked questions by a man. How crazy! Surprisingly, I could picture this scene in my mind. I'm glad I did not get lost because this was a key part to the advancement of the plot.

Chapter I

In chapter one, the novel begins by introducing two characters. One, being the main character, Beatrice, and a supporting character, Beatrice's mother.

"Our faction allows me to stand in front of it on the second day of every third month, the day my mother cuts my hair."

The fact that Abnegation cannot state their opinions and beliefs on others, I began to visualize. I believed that the abnegation were depressed because the amount of items they may speak of are limited. On a lighter note, abnegation runs government jobs, so at least the government will be able to make fair, unselfish decisions on behalf of Chicago.
