This chapter puts Tris's bravery to the test. In the beginning, Tris overcomes Peter's taunts by hitting the target over and over with knives. But Al couldn't say the same. He was struggling, badly. Eric gets mad with Al because he says he can't do it. He can't hit the target. On top of that, he couldn't satisfy Eric with his answers. This is where Al messes up. Eric tells him to go retrieve his knives while everybody else was throwing. He says no. He says no to the initiation leader. I can't blame Al for protecting himself, but Eric is correct. This is an act of cowardice. Tris, being the kind person she is, decides to take the heat. She steps in and takes Al's spot behind the knife board. Four begins throwing knives, getting progressively closer with each throw. I would have been so scared I would have started shaking.
"I touch my ear. He nicked it."
He hits her ear on the last throw. Ouch!!! This better have given her points towards initiation ranking, because if not, that definitely would not be fair.
