Chapter XXXIII

Tris tries to find Tobias to tell him what she’s figured out but in the chaos and celebration, she misses her chance and returns to the dormitory where she falls asleep from exhaustion.  She wakes up later in the dark to watch everyone putting on shoes and clothes, but not talking. This sounded really scary. It sounded like they were zombies! Tris tries to get Christina’s attention but she is like a sleepwalker.  All the initiates fall in line and file out of the dormitory which makes Tris realize she needs to be part of this and not be alone. She works hard to follow their lead and appear brain-dead so the leaders don’t discover she isn’t like the rest. I don't think I could have done a better job than Tris in this situation. It's hard trying to act like a sleepwalker!  The Dauntless faction has become trained to follow the Erudite commands and are equipped with guns. Tris quickly puts together a plan to pretend to follow long enough to try and save her family in Abnegation. She also realizes who the Dauntless leaders are because they are awake, as well as the Divergent. I think Tris finally has found a benefit of being Divergent. As the soldiers get into the train cars, Tris tries to find Tobias and is able to make her way into a car that she thinks holds Tobias. She sees his blank face and can’t believe it, but when the car gets full, he grabs her hand, letting her know he is awake.  The train reaches its destination and Tobias tells her to run but she is thinking of her family.  As she marches with Dauntless, she remembers her life with Abnegation and how it is different now:

“They are all different now.  The buildings are dark and empty.”

Tris wonders if they are really here to start a war.  As she hears the first gunshots, she sees Tori shoot one of the Abnegation council members and fights off her emotions so she will not be discovered.  Eric and another Dauntless female begin talking next to her, explaining how the Dauntless are controlled.  Eric discovers Tobias and considers killing him as no one would notice.  When the woman tells him to go ahead, Eric clicks the bullet into the gun’s chamber which makes Tris take action and press her gun barrel to Eric’s forehead.  She shoots him in the foot and Tobias quickly fires at the woman’s leg. Tris and Tobias run off, and Tris gets shot in the shoulder, knocking her down. Hopefully the wound isn't too bad or this might be the end of Tris! She tells Tobias to run, but he remains with her and they are captured.
