As time for the banquet arrives, Tris and Tobias walk to the
dining hall together and separate when they reach the entrance. Tris joins
Christina and Will and they discuss what jobs each might choose. I would choose a Dauntless leadership job, because I think that would be more fun than just training initiates. Christina is
interested in training initiates and Will would like to be a
Dauntless-leader-in-training. Tris
hasn’t given it much thought and says perhaps she could be an ambassador to
other factions. Christina asks Tris why
the leaders would be laughing during one of her fears and Tris then tells them
she has a fear of intimacy. Christina
and Will laugh it off which causes Tris to tease Christina about her fear of
moths. Eric begins his speech to congratulate
the new members to the Dauntless faction.
Tris feels his speech doesn’t seem truthful when he talks about bravery,
freedom from fear and being able to allow goodness to thrive. She thinks:
“Even though I know Eric probably doesn’t believe in any of
those things, I find myself smiling, because I believe in them. No matter how badly the leaders have warped
the Dauntless ideals, those ideals can still belong to me.”
Eric continues by explaining that the new members will be
choosing professions based upon the final rankings. Those rankings immediately
appear on the screen behind him, showing Tris finishing first. As everyone is
celebrating, Tris realizes Molly and Drew didn’t make the cut. It's too bad Molly didn't make it. Just kidding! Tobias and Tris celebrate with a public kiss
and as Tobias’s thumb brushes across her injection, she suddenly figures out
Erudite’s plan.
