Chapter XXV

Tris releases her anger and emotions by throwing the articles of the Abnegation from the Erudite over the chasm. Tris then sees Four and they begin to talk. Four and Tris go to the simulation room where Four tells her that she will discover why everybody calls him Four.

"See if you can figure out why they call me Four."

Inside the simulation, Four and Tris take a journey through Four's four fears, hence the name Four. His fears are height, confinement, having to shoot somebody, and being beaten by Marcus Eaton. Tris has to remind Four that this is a simulation and it will move on once the fears are conquered. In my mind while reading this, I found that Tris and Four switched spots; Four being the initiate, and Tris being the instructor. With height, you can tell right off the bat that Four is petrified. However, with the help of Tris, the two jump off of the high building together and proceed with the simulation. In the next scene, they are confined in a very small space, with walls squeezing the two Dauntless together. Four cringes, but Tris tells him to get closer and get more confined to move on. to me, this would have been the worst of all because I do not like to be trapped in a small space. I feel helpless, and unable to move. This means I am trapped, which to me is one of my fears. When Four is forced to shoot somebody, we are unsure of who it is. Tris is trying to identify the mysterious person, but we are unable to identify them. The last fear for Four is the worst. He is beaten by several different entities all appearing to be Marcus from Abnegation. Tris decides this is too much to bear (I would agree, nobody deserves to be in this position enduring this treatment for this long) and steps in, ending the simulation. Once out, Four says his name is Tobias Eaton, son of Marcus Eaton, the transfer from Abnegation that has gotten lots of press from the suspicious parenting tactics of Marcus. I saw this coming from a mile away. I could tell Four was different, just by the amount of sympathy that he had for Tris. On top of that, Four was first in his class. In the fear simulations, I could bet that it was easy for Four because he endured a lifelong fear simulation, which made the actual simulation that much easier.
